The harmful compound is carbon dioxide. It contributes to global warming and too much of it also harms our body. The two harmless elements that make up carbon dioxide is oxygen and carbon. To produce this compound, covalent bonding occurs. Oxygen atoms have eight electrons (six valence electrons). Carbon atoms have six electrons (4 valence electrons). Two harmless oxygen atoms have to bond with a harmless carbon atom to form the carbon dioxide. Two electrons of each oxygen atoms are shared with the carbon atom. So, each oxygen atom gains two electrons from the carbon atom, allowing them to have eight valence electrons each, making them both stable. The carbon atom also gains two electrons from each oxygen atom, allowing it to have a full valence shell, making it stable. Thus, the two harmless elements form the harmful compound, carbon dioxide (CO2) when covalent bonding occurs between them.
This is the Dot and Cross Diagram I drew for carbon dioxide. As you can see, all the atoms are now stable.
