The harmful compound that I have chosen is sulfur dioxide, formed by sulfur and oxygen. The chemical bonding involved is covalent bonding.

Sulfur is nonmetallic. It is an essential element for life and its commercial uses are primarily in fertilizers but also widely used in black gunpowder, matches, insecticides and fungicides.

Oxygen on the other hand is a highly reactive nonmetallic element that readily forms compounds with almost all other elements. It is the third most abundant element in the universe.

Sulfur dioxide is produced by volcanoes and in various industrial processes. As coal and petroleum usually contain sulfur compounds, the combustion of them generates sulfur dioxide unless the sulfur compounds are removed before burning the fuel. It is also produced in geysers.
